Amy Cramer’s path to becoming a successful employment law attorney in the Chicago area was shaped by a deeply personal experience and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Her journey began at a young age, with a family struggle that sparked her passion for advocating for workers and standing up for those in need.

A Childhood Shaped by Family Struggles

Amy’s journey into law started when she was just five years old. Growing up with a father who had Crohn’s disease, Amy witnessed firsthand the challenges that came with her father’s illness. Despite working as an architect for a large firm, her father’s health struggles led to his termination from his job, which, at the time, did not have protections for employees facing medical issues. This situation deeply impacted Amy, as she saw how the lack of legal protections affected her family’s stability.

“I remember my mom picking my dad up at the train station with a pink slip in his hand. He had been let go from his job because of his illness,” Amy recalls. “It was before laws like the Family Medical Leave Act, and my dad was the first to go when the company had to reduce its workforce.”

This experience left a lasting impression on Amy, showing her the profound impact that employment law can have on an individual’s life and family.

A Passion for Helping People

As Amy grew older, her sister suggested that she become a lawyer. At first, the idea seemed far-fetched since there were no lawyers in her family. However, Amy decided to take the LSAT, and from that moment, her path to law began to take shape.

“The idea of helping people through difficult times really resonated with me. I wanted to be someone who could offer solutions to people facing struggles, especially in employment situations,” Amy explains. Her natural instinct to care for others made employment law a perfect fit for her personality.

Overcoming Challenges and Building a Practice

Amy graduated law school in 2012, during a time when legal jobs were scarce. She found herself working as a contractor, earning just $18 an hour while dealing with significant law school debt. Things took a turn when she was let go from that position just one week before her wedding.

“That’s when my husband suggested I start my own practice,” Amy recalls. “It was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Starting her own practice from scratch was not easy, but Amy was determined to succeed. “I learned early on that I didn’t want to be a poor businesswoman, like my dad had been with his own business. I made a promise to myself that I would not make the same mistakes,” Amy shares.

A Decade of Success and Growth

Now, as Cramer Law celebrates its 10th year, Amy reflects on the incredible journey that has led her here. Starting her firm right after law school and building it from the ground up has been both challenging and rewarding. Over the years, Amy has successfully represented numerous clients and built a reputation as a powerful advocate for employees and employers alike.

“What started as a leap of faith has turned into a thriving practice. I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and I’m excited for what the future holds,” Amy says.

Looking to the Future

With a decade of experience behind her, Amy Cramer continues to grow her practice and help individuals and organizations navigate the complexities of employment law. Her passion for advocating for workers and providing legal solutions that protect employees remains at the heart of everything she does.

“I’m not just an attorney; I’m someone who genuinely wants to help people. I’ve been there. I’ve seen how difficult these situations can be, and I’m here to guide people through them,” Amy affirms.
