At Cramer Law Group, our commitment to advocating for employment rights is strengthened by the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team members. In a recent video, partner Tom Cramer shared his unique journey from his childhood in Evanston, Illinois, to becoming an employment attorney and navigating the ever-changing landscape of employment law.
Growing Up in a Dynamic Family
Tom’s upbringing in a family of six greatly influenced his values and career path. With three sisters and parents who were passionate about their professions—his mother a school psychologist and his father a commercial actor—Tom developed a strong sense of community and service from an early age. He spent much of his life in Chicago, but a stint as a wildland firefighter in Yosemite National Park provided him with life-changing experiences and skills.
“Working as an EMT in the national park, I not only fought fires but also took care of emergencies,” Tom recalled. This formative experience instilled in him a commitment to helping others, a theme that would carry through to his legal career.
A Path to Law School
After returning from California, Tom transitioned into political campaigns, where he met Amy Cramer, the founder of Cramer Law Group. Inspired by her passion for law, he quickly followed her lead into law school. After graduating, Tom became the second partner at Cramer Law Group, joining a firm that was already making waves in employment law.
Witnessing Societal Changes in Employment Law
Since their inception, Tom and Amy have witnessed significant societal shifts that have directly impacted employment law. When they began their practice, sexual orientation was not recognized as a protected class in Illinois or the U.S. However, thanks to evolving social attitudes and advocacy, it soon became a protected class, culminating in a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed this protection nationwide.
“Practicing during the #MeToo movement also highlighted the urgent need for legal support for victims of sexual harassment,” Tom noted. The firm’s work during this time was critical as society grappled with the importance of addressing workplace misconduct.
Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced unprecedented challenges, with many individuals losing jobs or adjusting to remote work environments. “People came to us for advice on managing a workforce that was no longer in the office and how to maintain work-life balance while working from home,” Tom explained. The pandemic accelerated changes in employment practices, prompting discussions about flexibility and employee rights.
The Dynamic Nature of Employment Law
Tom finds the dynamic nature of employment law both fascinating and rewarding. “Things are always changing in the news that affect it. Legislative changes are constant,” he said. This ever-evolving landscape means that employment attorneys must remain vigilant and adaptable, ready to address new challenges as they arise.
At the core of their practice, Tom and Amy focus on defending and protecting civil rights, whether for employees or employers. “Employment law is, at its heart, about civil rights,” Tom stated. He emphasized the importance of this tradition, which has deep roots in the founding of the country.
A Commitment to Advocacy and Change
Tom Cramer’s journey to becoming an employment attorney showcases his dedication to helping others and advocating for their rights. His experiences have shaped his perspective, making him a passionate advocate for change in the workplace.
